AEU Victoria is reiterating the need for TAFEs to be properly funded to deliver the skills Victoria needs after the Minister for Training and Skills, the Hon Steve Herbert, admitted that “profiteering, rorting and mounting debt” plagues the Victorian training sector.

Despite the massive handover of public funds to private for-profit training providers, we have seen a rapid deterioration in the quality of training across the board. Meanwhile, course fees and student debt are skyrocketing.

Despite federal legislation making it illegal for private training providers to offer incentives such as free laptops for signing up to courses, unscrupulous salespeople continue to flout this law and enrol vulnerable people in dodgy institutes. One of the worst offenders, Empower Institute, received $46 million in taxpayer funds last year when just five students graduated with qualifications. That’s almost $10 million of taxpayer money per student.
