The AEU is pushing for State and Federal Governments must guarantee TAFEs at least 70% of overall VET funding and limit government subsidies to private providers in the lead up to the election.

The union has committed to campaigning at the upcoming federal election for stronger controls on private providers, a suspension of the VET FEE-HELP scheme and a guarantee of funding for TAFEs.

Deregulation of the sector means TAFE has been forced to compete with shonky fly-by-night providers luring vulnerable jobseekers into a training debt with the offer of incentives such as ‘free’ laptops.

Federal Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham has continued to insist that most people undertaking VET study in Australia are getting “high-quality training that is job relevant and good value for money”.

Stand up for TAFE
