HELP SAVE TAFE - SEND YOUR MESSAGE NOW
Please ask your local MPs to fight the Baillieu Government's massive cuts to Victorian TAFE.
Thousands turned out to the Fight the TAFE Cuts! Rally in Melbourne today, disgusted by the Baillieu Government's decision to cut a savage $300 million from the public TAFE sector.
Cries of "Shame, Baillieu, shame" rang out across Treasury Gardens, where protestors gathered outside Premier Baillieu's office to voice their anger. Click here to see the photos.
About 2000 people attended the rally, called by the AEU after the shock budget announcement that funding for up to 80% of TAFE courses would be cut and institutes would lose their community service funding.
The Government's decision will lead to thousands of job losses, campus and course closures and significant fee rises for students.
Speaking in the gardens beneath Premier Ted Baillieu’s Treasury Place office, AEU president Mary Bluett said: “It’s a criminal act of social and economic vandalism that this government is wreaking on our TAFE system.”
NTEU Victorian secretary Colin Long, representing TAFE support staff, said: “We’ve seen the essence of the Baillieu Government exposed. This is a government that has chosen to build prisons and close TAFEs."

Remember that the State government has just spent $365 million on the new "upgrade" of Melbourne Park (next to HiSense Arena). And that there were already THREE state of the art stadiums in the near vicinity? Wouldn't this have just about covered the cost of the TAFE funding?
I've been going to Prahran campus since about 1988 when I learned how to type on the Apple IIe they had there. I've - apart from a couple of stints in north east Victoria - been going back to continue to use the library PC's, and then undertake more courses.
I know most of the library staff, and virtually consider them to be friends, so it was something of a shock when I found out the government wants to close the campus.
Some time ago, I was almost amazed to find out how experienced TAFE teachers needed to be to get their positons in terms of real world practical knowledge.
I've had experience trying to contact Ballieu - I'm convinced he's deliberately reduced his parliamentary admin staff to use as an excuse to take months to respond to enquiries from constituents.
Is Bailleu trying to emulate the former dictator of Romania, or is he just really slack?
I think he should resign and go back to designing crap as the archictect he was originally.

The Baillieu Government has a LOT to answer for. The impacts of Lilydale TAFE and other TAFE closures (as well as course cancellations) run deep. It not only impacts on staff and students, it impacts on local property prices, and local businesses (e.g. cafes and suppliers of accommodation) who rely on the business of TAFE students and staff. Furthermore, because people need to travel further to study, it leads to increased emissions/pollution and traffic congestion from increased transport requirements.
To top it off, studies have shown that education can act as a key tool for reducing crime. So I guess we'll be needing those brand new prisons now that education will be so hard to access for many.
And that's just for the ones who manage to get caught breaking into our homes and stealing our cars and other possessions, because they don't have enough money for every day living as a result of unemployment related to their lack of education.
While Baillieu has botched everything else up, at least he planned that well!

There are enough people out of work as it is- Tafe helps to bridge the gap. Without Tafe funding, people are not going to be able to afford courses. The country will have underqualified people, and more immigrants will be given jobs (no problem with that at all, but the gap between rich and poor will become greater). How about the Government stop wasting money on trees and the global warming myth (which even Julia Gillard admitted the carbon tax cannot stop any environmental damage whatsoever), and look after the wellbeing of the actual human beings of the country as a priority!

Is it all possible to get all the TAFE students together for a rally on the steps of the Victorian Parliment buildings ?

the government have said we need our education and now they are stopping alot of funding. tell us why, why once again are we going without things we the people need, education, employment, food, housing and this is going to put alot of people out of work and stop alot of peiple getting work as they dont have the training needed. instead of the government lining thier pockets they should be helping the people who have helped them get into office. our children and our adults need education and work is the government going to save homes feed people give people the lives they have been working hard for or are they just going to keep taking from us all.
its time for these questions to be answered and honestly not with the crap we have been hearing for years pull your fingers out and do your jobs for the people and for our children.

After working in the TAFE industry for nearly 20 years and building up an excellent program for retraining people to work in the health industry, these drastic funding cuts will see excellent courses being destroyed and unavailable to the young, unemployed and mature aged. Education is the stepping stone for everyone in society to enable them to climb the ladder to knowledge and prosperity.

I work as a support worker at a tafe with students with special needs, els students and students hae fallen through the cracks of the education system. I f you cut these classes many of these students will end up on the streets with nothing to do, that may, in the long run cost the government so much more. Think twice and then again about cutting these classes.

As a trade teacher, i believe I make a difference to the youth in this area who are fortunate enough to get an apprenticeship, by training them in skills for life.Unfortunately the cloud of redundancy hangs over us all here at Gippstafe, which seems to suit this Government and it's policy of a user pays education. The Libs love to pit worker against fellow worker, about whose job is on the line and whose job isn't, so morale is at an all time low. What is forgotten is how passionate and dedicated teachers are at passing on their skills to the next generation. If middle management was cut, TAFE would be a lot leaner, so there'd be no threat to teachers. No teachers, no TAFE
